Implementation: statistics
-
Hello Eliott,
I'm sorry if I am stepping out of bounds here, but I would like to suggest some sort of statistics for the games. I played snellman and he showed of all the games (number of games, races played, win by races and many others). Im pretty sure it also showed by player. I dont know how hard it is to implement these kinds of changes, but if possible you could do by parts. First do over all statistics, then players, then show if a player quits a lot. I tried playing pub games and I stopped because in every single one at least one player quit. Now I only play with my friends. In any case, I love what you have already done. Great job.
Thanks

This category is for feedback! You can report everything :)
It's true dropped players are a real problem. I think part of it is the interface when creating / joining a game, and part of it is enforcement.
I'm aware of the problem. I'm not sure about the stats in general for now (as we have a lot to do), but there needs to be something done about players dropping out. After we improve the interface yet again, if the problem continues, we'll need to add some enforcement.

Hi, just wanted to say that I agree with TheK6 about the stats, that would be super interesting.
Not necessarily players' stats, but it would be interesting to see how the different factions fare over a huge number of games. Obviously games where players have dropped should be somehow excluded from the calculations.
I realize of course that you already have plenty to and this looks somewhat superfluous... but still. Maybe for the future.
At any rate, thanks for the great job you guys are doing here.

I believe the problem with dropping players is in part due to the fact that people (me included at first) misunderstood the timer as a per move timer instead of a chess clock system, maybe a per move timer (like 24h 48h per move or something like that) might be more easy for players to deal with than the new stop timer option you implemented, but that's just a personal opinion and i think also that the current system will work perfectly fine once everybody will have gotten used to it.
As per the stats i totally second this and I would like to add that also end of game stats as on BGA and Snellman, that give a points breakdown of the score. But to collect meaningful data about factions you would need also an ELO scoring system that would allow you to filter out games with less experienced players to ensure you are looking at games where a faction has been played somewhat optimally. And that of of course is a huge amount of work and not an urgent one, I wish i could code to be able to help out but I can't, maybe though there's some good coder among the player who will!

Just a quick reply to this: yes, me as well, I happened to be kicked out of a game for inactivity because at first I didn't get how the timer worked. But this can happen at most once per player. I guess most of the people who drop do so for other reasons, so I'm afraid changing the timer settings wouldn't bring a great improvement...

well once i understood it i still had some games going with 1day timer that i already joined and on which I was already low on time which means that if someone made a move at 1am and I was already asleep I got dropped, so that happened on 3 games even after I understood how the timer worked, also I thought for quite a while that it was a bug after the first time it happened to me since I checked for moves several times a day and i didn't understand how was it possible. And the fact that i see many new games starting with 1day timer without interruption (which makes dropping a game very easy even when trying hard to stay in time) makes me think that it's not clear for everybody yet...

Well, sure, in general setting longer times for new games could help preventing unwanted drops. Still, I reckon there's plenty of people ragequitting or too busy to carry on with the game (something they should probably have thought of in advance)

+1 for keeping stats (an ELO system would be fantastic, but it looks like several steps further)... and for reporting the dropping problem.
You know, boasting with my friends when I win isn't the same when one or more players dropped out  .
@TheK6 you can join games with me or the other participants in this thread, we're all constant players ;)
