Game durations
-
As of now the game durations are:
- one hour
- six hours
- one day
- three days
- 15 days
And the time per move:
- 5 minutes
- 15 minutes
- 1 hour
- 2 hours
- 6 hours
Should we change some of those? Maybe add 20 minutes, remove 15 days, add 7 days?
-
I think these timings are fine. The problem is people joining and then not playing.
Thus, I'd ask for the opportunity to block other players from joining one's games.
Harsh and unfriendly as it may seem, a player recently joined two of my games and dropped out of both of them by inactivity, thus ruining the games for all those involved. This is frustrating, and I'd like to have to opportunity to say "I see you can't play these days, no problem pal, but I'd rather not having you at my table". -
Jesus, I only now realized that it´s 3 days overall, not per turn O_o
I didn´t even look properly because of snellman settings. -
It would be great in the future if live games were added with scaling time per turn. Great for knocking a game out in one sitting. Just a thought as I'm not sure the difficulty of implementing said feature.

Currently you can do a 1hour game + 5minutes per move. You can even specify a cutoff time after which the timer stops (e.g. set the timer to go from 5PM to 10 PM, and pause otherwise).
Isn't that good enough for liveplay? I don't understand what you mean by scaling time per turn.
-
Is it possible to add blitz timers? Like 30 minutes/player/game and 0 sec/move?
-
@Gyuri Blitz is a bit tough in a game like GP but maybe 10 min + 10 sec.
We need a way to unjoin automatically a player from a blitz game if they disconnect, and to make sure they don't have several short duration games at the same time.
-
Ok, I understand your concerns. IRL we play with 20-25min/person timers.
Is it possible to add this timer to private games only? Obviously it would be much more work than just changing only the timer settings.
-
@Gyuri That's a good idea.
We're planning to add another game right now (code of the game already exists), but after that we'll revisit the timing / live play issues (like at least adding an icon to see if a player is online in the sidebar, and offering more customization on the timer for private games is a good idea!)

@El-Temblo
I totally agree with blocking players who join and quit multiple times. I posted about this too. To this end it would also be nice to see who plays before you agree to play (this is true for all but the last player) so that the last player in cant be one of the "quitters" and also force a start. -

But still, the issue exists. Hm, maybe a "substitution" function as they have in boiteajeux could help:thinking_face: ?

@El-Temblo
He also quit another game I looked at - just sayin -
For live play, I think you would want something like 5min + 1min/move. Or maybe 30sec. Otherwise games will take longer than playing in person, which is what you want to avoid.
-
I know live games from other plattforms and it works well. 5min +15 sec. e.g. work fine. It is only important that the game does not start until both players agree to start the game within a certain time (e.g. one minute). This can take hours or days until the game starts but it only makes sense if both players are active at the same time.
-
I think live games don't really require a specific time setting as much as organisation among the players, there is a forums section called games which was meant to be used to organise live games but that nobody really uses, it could be much more useful to post there to arrange meetings between players, agree on settings etc. and start the game at a specific time agreed by all players
-
Wouldn't be helpful to give players a total allotted time for all moves? Let's say you choose 1 hour-clock per player, so you would know in advance that a 4P game would last no more than 4 hours. The site might even create game like this one automatically every X hours, so people would know there's a certain schedule.
-
That’s already how timer works actually and there is already the 1 hour option also
-
Also since there really aren’t that many people on this forum i don’t get the need for automatically created games when people could just post/check on the games section on this forum to schedule games,
also than you could have more flexibility like you could still create games with longer duration si that if one of the players who agreed to play live ever has an emergency he/she won’t lose karma.
I really feel that using the games section of the forum would be more effective and less effort than implementing various new time durations

I support Gyuri's idea about blitz timers.
I know some players would like to play real-time games, which is hypothetically not even impossible - however not enforceable - with the current settings on the site. Even with the strictest settings what all we can hope for is other players' willingness to play real-time, which hardly leads to the desired outcome, so games stuck, get frustrating and last several days as opposed to ~2 hrs.
